Fruity Fiesta

Looking for something to do, a little out of the ordinary?  Every June since 1954, June 24-27, 2010, the good folks of Luling, Texas, salute their favorite fruit with the annual Watermelon Thump. Live music, parades, seed spitting competitions, and the crowning of the Watermelon Thump Queen are just the beginning of the neighborly goodness radiating from the town's streets. With a population of less than 5,500, expect a friendly welcome but a lack of places to stay, with only two local inns. To rough it in the wild, head to nearby Palmetto State Park, where the thick vegetation gives off a jungle-like feel and provides shelter for the deer, armadillos, and birds that will be camping alongside you for the night. Or stop by River Bend RV Park on 1881 S State Highway 80 in Luling.     (830) 875-9548
