San Antonio Family Attractions: Low Cost or Free
On our "Ask Us" Pinterest page we recently had a request for ideas on
what to do in San Antonio with kids that's free or close to free. Here's a list of several activities for families, kids and
visitors to San Antonio that won't break the bank and will keep the kids
happy. There are several that kids of ANY age can take advantage of.

"Fork in the River" A Foodie Tour on the Riverwalk
Upon hearing those words, one may think of Italy, France, Spain or any number of European cities. For years, San Antonio has claimed a place worldwide in history and culture but now it has entered the stage along with renowned cities as a real player in the fields of food and architecture as well. And these fields of fame in our city can all be experienced on one venue within three glorious hours, the San Antonio Riverwalk, on a hot new Foodie/History tour. So whether your visit is as a San Antonio RVing Winter Texan, a romantic getaway in one our B & B's or even a day trip from our surrounding towns this is the foodie tour not to miss.
Beginning this month, June 2013, San Antonio's "Fork in the River" Tour premiers and promises to be the introduction to some of San Antonio's best kept culinary secrets. Of course, San Antonio has always been a hub for Tex Mex food and scores of restaurants have authentic and delicious offerings. To be fair, there are other foodie tours available in the area but this tour narrows the experience to Riverwalk locations who are not a chain, have no other affiliated restaurant and are not affiliated with a hotel.
The Review
At the outset, at the mid-afternoon hour of 2:45, we received a lively and seldom recounted, historical version of the Battle of the Alamo and a real feel for the city and the Mission San Antonio del Valero, as the Alamo was then called. After that we felt a much closer connection to those Alamo heroes. Interspersed between the eateries, we were led along the lesser traveled portions of the Riverwalk and treated to short but detailed bits of architectural facts regarding some of SA's fabulous buildings of varied styles. Our guide, Gary, brought to our attention many facts regarding the 'Paseo del Rio' and its inception and history.

- But all of this, although very enlightening and new to even San Antonio locals, was paled by the eateries. To start, we visited the typically Texan 1888 Texas Mercantile providing ONLY Texan grown and made specialties, some hot, some not but all tasty and with some taste surprises as well.

"Fork in the River" Tour Review
I am so excited to have been invited to the first viewing of a new attraction here in San Antonio. I have posted before about the wonderful walking tours available in San Antonio given by Mr. Pepe and his "San Antonio Walks" tour outfit. In addition to their history tour focusing on the Alamo and nearby historical icons, there is a King William Historic Neighborhood tour which tops the charts in my book.

So, Friday June 7 is the big day and I will rush right home to do a review of the tour so you can include it in your 2013 San Antonio plans.

How to See San Antonio in One Day Without a Car
They call it the Grand Tour, and it truly is. A full day of San Antonio attractions with out the bother of driving, parking fees or paying admission to the sights - makes this tour the best deal in town.
THE ALAMO
First, you'll be taken to the Alamo, the cradle of Texas liberty, established in 1718. Full of history, these grounds are a memorial to the men who sacrificed their lives fighting for Texas independence.
RIVERBOAT CRUISE
Cruise down the romantic San Antonio River and discover a world of sidewalk cafes, lush tropical foliage and charming boutiques. Take note of the places you may want to return to on another day to explore further.
MISSION CONCEPCION
You'll stop for a visit at Mission Concepcion and view the original frescos still visible within the rooms of the mission. This is the oldest unrestored stone church in the nation today.

Experience the finest example of a completely restored mission in the United States, renowned for exquisite stone carvings including the famous Rose Window. If you enjoyed the two mission, there are two more: Mission Espada and Mission San Juan, that you can check out on another day, once the tour has familiarized you with the locations.
JAPANESE SUNKEN GARDENS
This beautiful and architecturally unique old stone quarry is famous for its beautiful foliage. Note the close by San Antonio Zoo and Brackenridge Park so that you can plan a later trip there. The Park has free entry and is a great place to have a picnic lunch after a few hours at the zoo.
BUCKHORN SALOON & TEXAS RANGER MUSEUM
Next the tour will stop at the Buckhorn (admission included with tour) for a taste of the old west and wildlife exhibits from all over the world. You can sip a cool drink from the 1881 classic saloon as you stroll through the 33,000 square feet of artifacts and oddities from Texas history. The Ranger Museum admission is not included in the tour but discount tickets are available.
EL MERCADO
Visit the bakery at MiTierra and indulge in tasty pan dulce (Mexican Pastries.) Tour the Marketplace filled with vendors with colorful Mexican imports. Bargain for gifts from South of the border and enjoy the many Mexican food restaurants.
And best of all, the tour package includes being picked up AT YOUR Hidden Valley RV SITE at 8am, taken downtown in an air conditioned bus or trolley where you'll stop at the 7 famous attractions, admission fees are included as well as the price of a charming Riverboat Ride on the San Antonio River. Half way through there's a stop for lunch at Alamo Plaza. Then around 5 pm you are chauffeured home to your RV site. No gas, no parking, no entrance fees to the attractions.
