Do You Hate Fireworks?

dog watching fireworksEvery year around July 4th and again near the New Years celebrations, I experience the same dread:  Fireworks.  Why?  Yes, they are pretty and that part is fine but the noise is my objection.  Well, not so much mine but I sympathize with my pets and those of my neighbors.

Research shows that some dogs go through such stress during loud fireworks that it can make them physically sick.  It doesn't matter whether they are large or small either.  All size animals can be affected by loud explosions.  Additionally, puppies exposed to the loud bangs are more likely to become stressed and nervous dogs later in life. The PetAmberAlert.com group reports that there is a 30% increase of runaway pets taken into shelters after July 4th.

Of course, research is not necessary to see the often negative effects of firecrackers on animals.

So, since fireworks and firecrackers are inevitable during this time of year and other times too, what can we do to keep our pets more comfortable during them?

I interviewed several of our RVers for their solutions and here are some solutions they have come up

A Star Spangled 4th in San Antonio

San Antonio has always been a town to make any holiday an extravaganza and the 4th of July festivities are no exception.  If you've visited San Antonio recently you have braved some of the
most extreme heat we've experienced in years...108 degrees yesterday.  But the weathermen are predicting record temperature lows for the next week or so and WE ARE NOT COMPLAINING.  Sounds like perfect weather to be out around town enjoying the Riverwalk, the Zoo, the Missions, Sea World and Fiesta Texas.

Thursday is July 4th and there's no shortage of free and inexpensive activities.  While the amusement parks can be a little expensive, make sure to click on the links for Sea World and Fiesta Texas below for some good discounts available.  Here's a list of some of San Antonio's Star Spangled happenings:

Star Spangled Weekend in San Antonio

JULY 4TH FIREWORKS DISPLAYS
Some fireworks display locations in San Antonio include Woodlawn Lake Park HEB Fireworks, Seaworld's 4th of July Celebration, Freedom Fest at Market Square, an arts and crafts show along the River Walk and Fiesta Texas' Lights of Liberty extravaganza.  All these locations are an easy drive from Hidden Valley and we'll print you simple directions and maps to the place of your choice.

Due to the Texas droughts no personal fireworks are permitted and the firework stands will not even be allowed to sell this year.

A recently issued note:  According to the Fire Marshall all professional fireworks displays are also canceled till further notice. They informed me that the ban COULD change. However all the professional fireworks display hosts are hopeful that the Fire Marshall will issue a reprieve and they are advertising their festivities as planned and hoping for the best.  The normal locations where fireworks would be held are still planning their festivities (but without the fireworks if necessary).

Wishing all a safe and fun weekend.
