Do You Hate Fireworks?

dog watching fireworksEvery year around July 4th and again near the New Years celebrations, I experience the same dread:  Fireworks.  Why?  Yes, they are pretty and that part is fine but the noise is my objection.  Well, not so much mine but I sympathize with my pets and those of my neighbors.

Research shows that some dogs go through such stress during loud fireworks that it can make them physically sick.  It doesn't matter whether they are large or small either.  All size animals can be affected by loud explosions.  Additionally, puppies exposed to the loud bangs are more likely to become stressed and nervous dogs later in life. The PetAmberAlert.com group reports that there is a 30% increase of runaway pets taken into shelters after July 4th.

Of course, research is not necessary to see the often negative effects of firecrackers on animals.

So, since fireworks and firecrackers are inevitable during this time of year and other times too, what can we do to keep our pets more comfortable during them?

I interviewed several of our RVers for their solutions and here are some solutions they have come up

Celebrate San Antonio on New Years Eve and Day

It's almost time again to Celebrate San Antonio, so put on your party hats, grab some friends and head downtown on Dec 31 to ring in the new year with live entertainment and fireworks.
The Alamo city knows how to party and approximately 250,000 people are expected to help usher in 2011 at the free event only 10 minutes from Hidden Valley RV Park.
Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. on South Alamo Street between Market and Durango and spread through HemisFair Park and La Villita.  The fun will continue until 12:30 a.m. Jan. 1.  This is the 12th year for the event.
Local bands will perform on four stages throughout the evening with music ranging from pop and rock to Tejano.
There will be entertainment areas specifically designated for families and children, as well as games, rides and a carnival along Alamo Street.  Food and beverage booths are also available.
The highlight of the celebration will be the countdown to midnight and fireworks shot from the top of the Tower of the Americas.
For more details check out their website or call 210-212-8423

Don't forget our New Years Day Football Marathon and Eat-A-Thon at the park registration house on Saturday from around 1 to when ever the games finish or longer.  watch the games on the big screen TV and sit by the fire with us and join the fingerfood potluck for a whole afternoon of fun.

Spend New Years Eve at the Theater

Looking for something to do New Year's Eve? A few San Antonio theaters have got your back:
Cameo Theatre, 1123 E. Commerce St.: The theater is offering a couple of options. Folks can start the evening at 8 with the very funny “Inspecting Carol,” about a production of “A Christmas Carol” that goes horribly awry. At 10 p.m., “Rockin' New Year's Eve” starts, featuring scenes from musicals staged this past year. As midnight draws near, the party moves up to the Cameo roof and out onto the sidewalk, where the downtown fireworks display will be visible. A cash bar will be taking and serving orders throughout the evening. Tickets cost $25 for the entire evening and $15 for “New Year's Rockin' Eve” alone. Call (210) 472-2636 for reservations or visit cameocenter.com to buy tickets online.
Josephine Theatre, 339 W. Josephine St.: The very funny holiday edition of “High Hair and JalapeƱos” ends its run with a special New Year's Eve performance. The show, an irreverent take on all things Texas spiced up with new numbers dealing with the holidays, starts at 8 p.m., followed by a New Year's bash in the theater's bar. The evening includes an appetizer and dessert buffet; “High Hair” party hats, karaoke and a trivia game built around the show; and a glass of Champagne to welcome 2010. Tickets to the entire evening cost $50. Call (210) 734-4646 for reservations.
Performing Arts San Antonio, 15717 San Pedro: The new theater and training facility will open with a New Year's Eve party from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The evening will include vocal and dance performances, dancing, wine, Champagne and all kinds of munchies. Tickets cost $30; cocktail clothes are required. Call (210) 557-1187 to buy tickets.
